At school we are reading this book called Jake Drake Bully Buster and we are in book groups.  Every person in the book group has a job.  One is word detective, one is summarizer,  one is predicter, one is questioner.  One person is the leader, the leader asks questions about the book like what did you like or dislike about the book or the leader would choose someone to share what they wrote.

Busy Week

These student are you looking for questions in the text.  One of the common core standards is for students to be able to ask and answer questions.
We now have a vocabulary word of the day.  The students can earn a square if they use the word in their writing.
The students really enjoyed pajama day!!
During math the students worked really hard using bar models to solve word problems.  There are three types of bar models.  Ask your child what the three types are?
More bar models!!!

In school we've  been learning about the Wampanoag.  It has been interesting to learn how life was long ago.  In  the winter the Wampanoag  tribe built  a longhouse because the inside was made out of fur.  This would keep them warm.

Math Centers

Today in math students worked in four differents centers.

In one center they played Scoot.  The students practiced regrouping with subtraction.
Once they finished a problem they would then "scoot" the problem to the next person.

In another center they got to play a math game.  They would have to build two three digit numbers that add up close to 1,000 but without going over.  Then they would subtract that number from 1,000 and that would be the answer for that round.  The person with the lowest number after six rounds is the winner.
In one center the students had to look at subtraction problems and find the mistake.  They would explain the mistake and then solve the problem the correct way.

Noah's Blog

We learned the steps to photosynthesis and made pictures of what that would look like. The first step is the roots take in the water and minerals. Then the plant gets carbon dioxide through small holes called pores or stomas. After the plant gets energy from the sun. The plant forms a surgar called glucose. Finally the plants give off oxygen.

We are doing a globle read aloud with the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Today we skyped with Illinois. We asked questions about the book like what is the character trait of Edward Tulane. They also asked questions. This is our second time skyping with Illinois and we are excited to do some more skyping.

Reading and Writing

In Fundations Teddy is teaching us the 1-1-1 rule.  If a word is a closed syllable with one syllable, has one vowel, and one consonant closing in the vowel then it is a 1-1-1 word.  Ask you child what they have to do with the ending consonant when they add a vowel suffix.

In writing the students working on showing not telling.  Instead of saying;  "I was happy," the students worked on explaining what they were doing to show they were happy.

More Fun Pictures from the Week

Georgia and I looked like twins today.
We celebrated two birthdays on the same day!

More pictures from Johnny The K

He sent a wonderful message to the students while having fun.
In the picture he is telling the students that it isn't what is on the outside that counts it is what is on the inside.
Another message he sent was in order to be cool you must be kind and cherish every moment.

He sang a great song about Steward School!
The last message he sent was don't bully others.  His song was about how lonely people feel when they are bullied.  It was a very powerful message.

Blog by Alex

This morning my class went to see Johnny The k. He was pretty funny when he was talking about his colorful hats.   He also sang a lot of songs.  He talked about being respectful and being kind mostly and changed them into songs.  He said  that treating others the way  you want to be treated is practically all you have to do to be respectful.  He said not to bully because it can really hurt people's feelings was the message he was trying to tell us!

Writing

We began writing Personal Narratives this week.  The students were taught how to use a sequencing brain frame which is a type of graphic organizer.  Once they completed their brain frame they were allowed to begin their story.  I shared with the students about the ONE AND ONLY time I went on The Tower of Terror.
Here is an example of my graphic organizer:
