January 23rd

During our RTI block students are working on different things they need.  These students are working hard on a math challenge!  They did a great job!

Here are some text features we find in our nonfiction texts.  They help us to understand what we are reading.  This week the students did an amazing job looking for cause/effect relationships!!

In writing these students are working on an opinion piece.  We read "Don't Let the Pigeons Drive the Bus."  Each student had to give their opinion on whether or not the pigeon should be able to drive the bus.  They had to give at least reasons and a detail to support each reason!

Spelling

New Spelling!

The third graders began a new spelling program last week. This program is designed to help the children internalize the spelling words and write them with automaticity in their daily writing. The spelling words correlate with our Fundations program. At the beginning of each week, the students will be given a pre assessment. On Fridays, they will be given a post assessment. Starting this week, students will complete all their assessments and spelling work in their spelling notebook. They will keep this in school and use it as a resource in the classroom. Your child will be given several opportunities to practice the words in class each week.

January 12th

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

We had a great first week back to school.  All the students came back to school ready to learn.
In reading we began our Nonfiction Unit of Study.  Throughout the month we will focus on reading nonfiction books.  Some strategies we will work on while reading are; asking and answering questions, main idea and detail, and cause and effect.
We also began our Opinion Writing.  Last week the students had to chose between two silly things (would you rather have an elephant's nose or giraffe's neck) and they had to be able to support their answer.  They had a great time doing this!
This week our MCAS homework will begin going home on Monday.  The student's have a week to complete the assignment.  They must also continue to read for 15 minutes each night.  If they have extra time they can continue to practice their multiplication facts.  I am impressed with how well they are learning them!

Have a good week!
